OVERVIEW: TURKEY

Straddling the two continents of Europe and Asia, Turkey is located on the Mediterranean in the Anatolian region of west Asia and separated from mainland Europe by the Turkish Straits.
The Black Sea is to the North, the Aegean Sea to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the southwest, and shares land borders with Armenia and Georgia to the northeast, Iran, Iraq and Syria to the southeast, and Bulgaria and Greece to the west.
With and area of 300.948 sq miles (779,452 sq km) Asia Minor (or Anatolia) accounts for 97% of the country's area and forms a long, wide peninsula 1,650km (1,025 miles) from east to west and 650km (400 miles) from north to south. The central Anatolian plateaus are enclosed by two east-west mountain ranges, the Black Sea Mountains in the north and the Taurus in the south, and converge in a vast mountainous region in the far east of the country.

Turkey’s long Mediterranean coastline is a Mecca for tourists, attracting millions of European holidaymaker's each year. Water sports such as Diving, windsurfing, waterskiing and sailing are all possible in the warm waters offshore. It is also possible to charter a gulet, a traditional wooden boat for cruises along the coast. Hire periods for a week or more are available, with a variety of stops and destinations along the way.

The Mediterranean resort of Belek near Antalya has become the main golfing centre, with eight golf courses to choose from. The best playing conditions are from September to May, with many large resort hotels to stay in nearby.

Rock climbing and mountaineering in one of the country's mountain ranges are growing in popularity. Mount Ararat, rising to 16,945 ft (5,165m) is the highest peak in the country found in eastern Turkey and the Kackar Mountains of the Black Sea region among the best destinations.

The capital city of Istanbul with its fabulous setting, wealth of historic sights and vibrant cultural life has the world's largest covered market, the Grand Bazaar. The more modern department store in the uptown areas has plenty to offer for visitors to browse for cut-price fashion goods and clothing.

And of course no visit to Turkey would be complete without experiencing a Turkish bath to have a scrub and massage! Known as a hamam In Istanbul, the most popular historic baths are the Galatasaray Hamam in Beyoglu and Cagaloglu Hamam in Sultanahmet, though local baths are often just as good.

Whether you are looking for a low cost family holiday or five star luxury, good family beaches or a hedonistic nightlife; from admiring the archaeological and cultural wonders or making it an adrenaline filled adventure holiday, Turkey has plenty to offer.
