Summary: All the help you will need in planning a trip, break or holiday in the UK
The United Kingdom (UK) consists of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and Northern Ireland. Although the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are classed as part of the British Isles, they are not officially part of the UK.
Located in Western Europe, the islands are in between the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. Separated from mainland Europe by the English Channel, France lies only 22 miles (35km) away, and the two are linked by the Channel Tunnel between Dover in England and Calais in France.
With a land area of some 241,590 sq kms, the geography of the UK is varied, with rugged hills and low mountains, vast rolling moors in the North of England, flat plains to the East and Southeast, and the lakes and mountains of the Lake District and Scotland. The highest point is Ben Nevis in Scotland, which rises to 1343m. Nowhere in the UK is more than 80 miles (125kms) from tidal waters due to its long coastline which is broken by many bays and river estuaries.
With a coastline of over 1800 miles without including Wales and Scotland, some of the best British beach resorts are found along the South Coast, although long sandy stretches of beach's can be found along both the East and West coasts.
Add in ancient forests, patchwork landscapes scattered with picture box cottages in country villages, cities bursting with history where buildings old and new rub shoulders, it is easy to see why the UK is a popular holiday destination for home grown and overseas visitors alike.
