My daughters car is hard to start and when we checked the oil today it is really black - all the way up the dip stick and watery what could be causing this?

There should be No water in the oil, and No oil in the water tanks. Any brown gunge on your oil filler cap?
Is it overheating, or using water?

Have you any of these symptoms?

I would suggest you get the head-gasket checked pronto. The symptoms fit, and consequences can be very expensive. The quicker it is fixed the cheaper, and more effective the repair will be. Other tasks often get done at the same time, eg cam-belt and tensioner, and water pump.
