Ford Focus 2006 1.6 petrol
When the engine is switched off when hot and re-started after say 10 minutes a loud clattering sound can be heard from cylinder head area on engine (tappets?)
Taken car to two Ford Dealers and neither can solve the problem. :( |

There is a high possibility that the oil is degraded in viscosity, requiring an immediate oil/filter change. The specification of the oil should reflect the type of use the car is subject to. I.E. fully synthetic if intensively urban use.
The hydraulic tappet capsules in modern engines need adequate thickness of oil, for the capsule to reliably fill, and usually only gives some noise on the first start-up of the day, but cheap oil degrades quickly, especially if diluted by fuel, or overheated greatly.
It may be the case that only one capsule is losing its prime, and that can be traced by use of a listening probe, such as a stick, moved gradually along the valve covers, whilst the other end is in contact with the bone behind the ear of the mechanic. ( like a midwife monitoring the heartbeat of a baby ).
Replacement of any defective capsules is not unknown, but is a task for a mechanic. |
