wonky indicaters

can anyone tell me why & how to put this right, when driving at night with lights on, after indicating to turn, the indocater cancels as it should do, but main beam comes on immediately after this, I know this is not a major problem but it is most annoying, how difficult is it to strip and repair the indicater assembly column?, could i make the problem worse doing this? any thoughts or help most appreciated
