escort engine over revving

I have an escort 1.6. Whilst driving along the engine over revs making it hard to control the speed. When stationary the revs take longer to return to idle. I have had the engine cleaned and this cured the problem for a while but has since returned. Any thoughts anyone???

Hi, ive had the exact same problem with 1.6 zetec engine. it could be the sticking valve problem which can usually be cured by flushing the engine oil and replacing with 20w5 oil which runs thinner at a low temp (i think, ask at your supplier to confirm).
