Starting a screw off in hard timber, in a place not easily accessible is not easy. Using these screws however, makes it considerably easier. The serrated teeth on the first 12mm of the screw bites into the timber immediately keeping the screw straight and forcing it's own pilot hole. The closer you get to the edge of your timber, the more likely you are to need a pilot hole, but for central applications these screws are great.
