Bed coat

Bed joint
(1) The horizontal layer of mortar on which a masonry unit is laid. (2) In an arch, a horizontal joint or one that radiates between adjacent voussoirs. (3) A horizontal fault in a rock formation.

Bedding coat (bed coat)
Ordinarily, the initial coat of joint compound on gypsum board applied over tape, bead, and other fastener heads.
Bedding course
The initial layer of mortar at the bottom of a masonry construction.
Beech
Any of a number of hard timbers of the genus fagus, having characteristics of straight, close grain and good workability. Beech is often used in furniture, turnings, tools, and similar products.
Belling
In pier, caisson, or pile construction, the process of enlarging the base at the bearing stratum to provide more bearing area.
Belt
A flexible continuous loop that conveys power (or materials) between the pulleys or rollers around which it passes.
Belt sander
An electrically powered, portable sanding tool with a continuous abrasive belt driven in one direction only. A belt sander is used to smooth surfaces, usually timber.
Belt tightener
A device incorporated into the construction of a conveyer belt for adjusting the belt tension by repositioning the counterweight and pulley.
Bench
(1) A long seat, with or without a back, made in any of several materials, such as timber, metal, or fibreglass, and usually accommodating more than one person. (2) One step, level, or shelf in a cut or excavation that is performed in several layers.
Bench mark
(1) A marked reference point on a permanent object, such as a metal disc set in concrete, whose elevation as referenced to a datum is known. (2) A mark made by a surveyor or general contractor to be used as a reference point when measuring the elevation or location of other points.
Bench sander
An electrically powered, bench-mounted sanding machine that uses a rotating abrasive disk or grinder, or a continuous abrasive belt, to smooth the surface of objects held against it.
Bench vise
An ordinary vise attached to a workbench to hold a material or component in place while it is being worked on.
Bench work
All work performed on a bench rather than on machines or in the field.
Bend
(1) An elbow fitting or other short length of bent conduit used to join two lengths of straight adjacent conduit. (2) A pipe fitting used to achieve a change in direction.
Bending moment
The bending effect at any section of a beam. The bending moment is equal to the algebraic sum of moments taken about the centre of gravity of that section.
Bending schedule
A list of reinforcement prepared by the designer or detailer of a reinforced concrete structure which shows the shapes, dimensions, and location of every bar, and the number of bars required.
Bent
(1) A structural framework, transverse to the length of a structure, designed to carry lateral as well as vertical loads. (2) Any of several grasses of the genus agrostis which are used where a resilient, velvety texture is required.
Bent bar
A reinforcing bar bent to a prescribed shape, such as straight bar with hook, stirrup, or column tie. A bent bar is bent to pass from one face of a member to the other.
