Summary: An explanation of terms used in the home improvement, building and construction trades for letter B.
Bird wire
Wire mesh used to cover chimneys, ventilators, and louvers to prevent birds from entering buildings through these accesses.
Bird's mouth
An interior angle or notch cut across a piece of timber, for the reception of the edge of another, as that in a rafter to be laid on a plate
Bit
(1) The tool that fits into a brace or drill and is rotated to bore a hole. (2) On a soldering iron, the (usually copper) tip that heats the joint and melts the solder. (3) That part of a key which is inserted into a lock and engages the tumblers or bolt. (4) A binary digit; the smallest unit of computerized data.
Bit brace
See handbrace.
Bit extension
A length of rod held at one end by the chuck of a brace and equipped at the other end for holding a bit. A bit extension permits the drilling of holes whose required depth is greater than the length of an ordinary bit.
Bit gauge (bit stop)
A piece of metal projecting outward from a bit to limit its depth of penetration.
Bits per second
A unit of measurement for data transmission. May be expressed as kilobits (Kbps) for thousands of bits per second; megabits (Mbps) for millions of bits per second; or gigabits (Gbps) for billions of bits per second.
Bitumen
Any of several mixtures of naturally occurring or synthetically rendered hydrocarbons and other substances obtained from coal or petroleum by distillation. Bitumen is incorporated in asphalt and tar and is used in road surfacing and waterproofing operations.
Bituminous
Composed of, similar to, derived from, relating to, or containing bitumen. The term bituminous is descriptive of asphalt and tar products.
Bituminous base course (black base)
Bituminously bound aggregate serving as a foundation for binder courses and surface courses in asphalt paving operations.
Bituminous coating
Any waterproof or protective coating whose base is a compound of asphalt or tar.
Bituminous distributor
A tank truck equipped with a perforated spray bar through which heated bituminous material, such as tar or road oil, is pumped onto the surface of a road.
Bituminous emulsion
(1) A suspension of any globules of a bituminous substance in water or an aqueous solution. (2) An invert emulsion of the above, i.e. a suspension of tiny globules of water or an aqueous solution in a liquid bituminous substance. This type of bituminous emulsion is applied to surfaces to provide a weatherproof coating. See also emulsified ashpalt.
Bituminous felt
See asphalt-prepared roofing.
Bituminous leveling course
In paving operations, a course consisting of a mixture of asphalt and sand and used to level or crown a base course or existing deteriorating pavement prior to the application of a surface.
Bituminous macadam
A paving material comprising bituminously coated coarse aggregate.
Bituminous paint
A thick black waterproofing paint containing substantial amounts of coal tar or asphalt.
Black steel pipe
Steel pipe that has not been galvanized.
Blanket
(1) Soil or pieces of rock remaining or intentionally placed over a blast area to contain or direct the throw of fragments. (2) Insulation sandwiched between sheets of fabric, plaster, or paper facing, used for protecting fresh concrete during curing.
Blanket insulation
Faced or unfaced thermal or sound insulation, usually made of fibreglass, available in densities and thicknesses that allow it to conform to the various-shaped spaces it encounters in its many applications. Blanket insulation is the same as batt insulation, except that it is supplied in continuous rolls instead of sheets.
