Summary: Building dictionary to explain building jargon and terminology from A - Z.
Computer-aided facilities management
See computerized maintenance management software.
Computer-aided design (computer-aided design and drafting)
The use of computer technology to analyze, design or model a building or system. Allows for greater efficiency and consistency, faster reproduction, and easier alteration than traditional methods.
Computerized maintenance management software (CMMS)
The use of computer technology to schedule plant and equipment maintenance, track assets, and efficiently carry out overall facility management. The purpose of CMMS is to simplify the planning and administrative functions of maintenance, purchasing, and inventory management.
Concealed hinge
A hinge mortised into both the jamb and edge of a door so that it is hidden when the door is closed.
Concentric load
See centric load.
Concentric tendon
One of several steel cables or rods that run through the centre of gravity of a prestressed concrete member, thus placing it in compression.
Concourse
An open area for the circulation of large crowds within a building, as in an airport terminal or shopping mall.
Concrete
A composite material consisting of sand, coarse aggregate (gravel, stone, or slag), cement, and water. When mixed and allowed to harden, it forms a stone-like material.
Concrete admixture
A special substance or chemical added to a concrete mix. Typically, an admixture is used to control setting, entrain air, impart color, control workability, or to waterproof.
Concrete insert
A device, such as a pipe sleeve, a threaded bolt, or a nailing block, that is attached to a concrete form before placing concrete. When the concrete forms are removed, the insert remains embedded in the concrete.
Concrete pile
A slender, precast concrete-reinforced member that is embedded in the soil by driving, jetting, or insertion into a predrilled hole. May or may not be prestressed.
Concrete aggregate
Granular mineral material that is mixed with cement and water to form concrete.
Concrete block
A masonry building unit of concrete that has been cast into a standard shape, size, and style.
Concrete bucket
On a crane, the bucket that is used to carry concrete.
Concrete curing compound
A chemical applied to the surface of fresh concrete to minimize the loss of moisture during the first stages of setting and hardening.
Concrete cylinder test
A compression test for concrete strength. Wet samples of concrete are carefully placed in specially made containers 150mm in diameter and 300mm high. The cylinders are sent to a laboratory where a compression test is performed. This is done by putting the concrete in a hydraulic machine that measures the pressure(s) needed to crush it. Cylinder tests are usually performed for each pour on a project
Concrete finish
The smoothness, texture, or hardness of a concrete surface. Floors are trowelled with steel blades to compress the surface into a dense protective coat. Walls that are exposed to the weather are often ground with a carborundum stone or wheel, with cement then added to fill the small voids. A smooth surface is desired so that water cannot enter the small holes, freeze, and deteriorate the surface.
Concrete finishing machine
(1) A portable machine with large paddles like fan blades used to float and finish concrete floors and slabs. (2) A large power-driven machine mounted on wheels that ride on steel pavement forms. Used to finish concrete pavements.
Concrete floor hardener
An additive used to impart extra wear and chip resistance to concrete floors. The additive may be placed in the mix before the floor is cast, or it may be applied to the surface in liquid or granular form.
Concrete gun
A hand-controlled tool at the end of a hose for injecting or spraying concrete by pneumatic pressure.
