Concrete masonry
(1) Concrete blocks laid with mortar or grout in a manner similar to bricks. (2) Concrete that may be poured in place or as special tilt-up building walls.

Concrete mixer (cement mixer)
A machine that mixes cement, aggregate, and water to make concrete. The components are loaded into a rotating drum.

Concrete nail
A steel nail that has been hardened and fitted with a diamond point so that it can be driven into concrete without bending.

Concrete paint
See cement paint.

Concrete paver
(1) A machine used to pave roads with concrete. A paver is equipped with a loading skip, a rotating drum, and a discharge boom. (2) A precast paving block used in landscaping for walks and patios.

Concrete planer
A machine with cutters or grinders used to level and refinish old concrete pavement.

Concrete plank
A hollow-core or solid, flat beam used for floor or roof decking. Concrete planks are usually precast and prestressed.

Concrete pump
A pump that forces premixed concrete through a hose to a desired location.

Concrete reinforcement
Metal bars, rods, or wires placed within formwork before concrete is added. The concrete and the reinforcement are designed to act as a single unit in resisting forces.

Concrete saw
A power saw used, for example, to cut concrete in order to remove damaged sections of pavement or to groove the surface to create a control joint.

Concrete slump test
A test to determine the plasticity of concrete. A sample of wet concrete is placed in a cone-shaped container 300mm high. The cone is removed by slowly pulling it upward. If the concrete flattens out into a pile only 100mm high, it is said to have an 200mm slump. This test is done on the job site. If more water is added to the concrete mix, the strength of the concrete decreases and the slump increases.

Concrete truck mixer
A concrete mixer suitable for mounting on a truck chassis and capable of mixing concrete in transit. See also agitator.

Concrete; air-entrained
Concrete containing minute air bubbles that improve its workability and frost resistance.

Concrete; fibrous (fibrous concrete)
Concrete into which fibrous material, such as glass fibres, has been mixed to increase tensile strength while reducing weight.

Concrete; foamed
A lightweight, cellular concrete made by infusing an unhardened concrete mixture with prepared foam or by generating gases within the mixture. The result is a light, porous material, full of air holes, with low strength and good thermal properties.

Concrete; in-situ (insitu or cast-in-place concrete)
Concrete cast in its final location in the finished structure where it will harden to become an integral part of the structure, as opposed to precast concrete.

Concrete; normal weight
Concrete made with the standard mix of component materials and weighing approximately 2.2 to 2.6 tonnes per m3.

Concrete; preplaced-aggregate
Coarse aggregate placed in a form, with Portland cement grout injected later.

Concrete; prestressed
Concrete members with internal tendons that have been tensioned to put a compressive load on the members. When a load is applied to a prestressed member, compression is decreased where tension would normally occur.

Concrete; ready-mixed
Concrete manufactured for delivery to a purchaser in a plastic and unhardened state. See also concrete.
