Continuous footing

Continuous hinge (piano hinge)
A hinge that extends the full length of the moving part to which it is attached.

Continuous load
A load in which the maximum current is expected to continue for at least three hours.

Continuous rating
The constant load that a device can carry at rated primary voltage and frequency without damaging or adversely affecting it.

Continuous span
A rigid span extending over three or more supports so that bending movements are transmitted from one segment to the next.

Contour line
A line on a map or drawing indicating a horizontal plane of constant elevation.

Contract
An agreement between two parties to perform work or provide goods, including an agreement or order for the procurement of supplies or services.

Contract documents
All the written and graphic documents concerning execution of a particular construction contract. These include the agreement between the owner and contractor, all contract');">conditions of the contract including general and supplementary conditions, the specifications and drawings, any changes to the specifications and drawings, any changes to the original contract, and any other items

Contract sum
An amount representing the total consideration in money to be paid the contractor for services performed under the contract for construction.

Contract type
The specific pricing arrangements employed for the performance of work under contracts. These arrangements include firm fixed-price, fixed-price incentive, cost-plus-fixed fee, cost-plus-incentive fee, and several others.

Contraction joint
See control joint.

Contractor
A constructor who is a party to the contract for construction, pledged to the owner to perform the work of construction in accordance with the contract documents.

Contributory negligence
A term used to describe legal responsibility for an error or fault by one or more parties who have allegedly contributed in whole or in part to a loss or damage suffered by another party as a result of a specific occurrence.

Control joint
A formed, sawed, or tooled groove in a concrete structure. The purpose of the joint is to create a weakened plane and to regulate the location of cracking resulting from the dimensional change of different parts of the structure.

Controller
An electrical, electronic, pneumatic, or mechanical device designed to regulate an operation or function.

Convection
The movement of a gas or liquid upward as it is heated and downward as it is cooled. The movement is caused by a change in density.

Conversion
(1) The change in use of a building, as from a warehouse to residential units, that may require changes in the mechanical, electrical, and structural systems. (2) The sawing or milling of timber into smaller units.

Conversion factor
Any factor used to change from one unit of measurement to another. For example, yards are converted to feet by multiplying by three.

Converter
A device that changes electrical energy from one form to another, as in coverting alternating current to direct current.

Conveyance
An electrical, electronic, pneumatic, or mechanical device designed to regulate an operation or function.
