Convection
The movement of a gas or liquid upward as it is heated and downward as it is cooled. The movement is caused by a change in density.
Conversion
(1) The change in use of a building, as from a warehouse to residential units, that may require changes in the mechanical, electrical, and structural systems. (2) The sawing or milling of timber into smaller units.
Conversion factor
Any factor used to change from one unit of measurement to another. For example, yards are converted to feet by multiplying by three.
Converter
A device that changes electrical energy from one form to another, as in coverting alternating current to direct current.
Conveyance
An instrument or deed by which a title of property is transferred.
Conveyor belt
A power-driven apparatus comprising a single continuous belt and the idler wheels around which it passes to transport materials or products placed on the upper surface of the belt.
Coolant
A fluid used to transfer heat from a heat source to a heat exchanger, where the heat is removed and the coolant is usually recycled.
Cooling plant
The machinery that produces chilled water or cool refrigerant gas, such as the condenser, cooling tower, and condenser water pumps for watershed plants; air-cooled condensers for air-cooled systems; and chilled water pumps and expansion tanks for chilled water systems.
Cooling tower
An outdoor structure, frequently placed on a roof, over which warm water is circulated for cooling by evaporation and exposure to the air. A natural draft tower');">cooling tower is one in which the airflow through the tower is due to its natural chimney effect. A mechanical draft tower employs fans to force or induce a draft.
Cooperative
A type of participant ownership in a building or complex. Actual ownership is by a nonprofit corporation. Individuals are part owners of the corporation and pay monthly fees for use or occupancy of part of the building.
Coping
The protective top member of any vertical construction such as a wall or chimney. A coping may be masonry, metal, or wood, and is usually sloped or beveled to shed water in such a way that it does not run down the vertical face of the wall. Copings often project out from a wall with a drip groove on the underside.
Coping saw
A light hand saw with a narrow blade mounted in a U-shaped frame with a handle. A coping saw is used to cut curves in wood. The blade may be rotated to keep the frame away from the work.
Copper fitting
In piping, an elbow, tee, reducer, or other fitting made of wrought copper, cast brass, or bronze.
Copper roofing
A roof covering made of copper sheets joined by weatherproof seams.
Corbel
A course or unit of masonry that projects beyond the course below. A corbel may be used entirely for decoration or for a ledge to support a load from above.
Corded door
A suspended door or divider made of plastic, vinyl, or timber slats interconnected with cord or tapes. When opened, the door slides in tracks folding back flat in accordion pleats.
Core
(1) The interior structure of a hollow-core door. (2) A cylindrical sample of concrete or rock extracted by a core drill. (3) The void in a concrete masonry unit. (4) The centre layer of a sheet of plywood. (5) The vertical stack of service areas in a multistory building. (6) The central part of an electrical winding. (7) Metal support for a handrail. (8) The rubble filling in a thick masonry wall. (9) The centre material between facing papers in gypsum wallboard.
Core drill
A drill used to remove a core of rock or earth material for analysis. (2) The drilling of a hole through a concrete floor, wall, or ceiling for running pipe or conduit.
Core test
A compression test on a sample of hardened concrete cut out with a core drill.
Coreboard
A manufactured board with a wood fibre or wood chip centre and bonded veneer faces on both sides.
