Current density
The current flowing to or from a unit area of an electrode surface.

Current liabilities
Liabilities to be paid within one year.

Current transformer
A transformer generally used to convert a current supplied at one current rate to another current rate.

Current-carrying capacity (ampacity)
The maximum rated current, measured in amperes, that an electrical device is allowed to carry. Exceeding this limit could lead to early failure of the device or create a fire hazard.

Current-limiting fuse
A fuse that acts as a protective device by interrupting currents in its current-limiting range and guarding against overcurrents in an electrical system.

Curtain board (draft curtain)
A heavy roof');">fireproof fabric hung from a roof or ceiling to isolate a hazardous area and act as a shield against the spread of a fire by containing heat and smoke for direct venting.

Curtain track
A system of tracks or bars that support draperies and allow them to be drawn.

Curtain wall
The exterior closure or skin of a building. A curtain wall is nonbearing and is not supported by beams or girders.

Curtained doorway
A doorway consisting of two overlapping sheets of plastic over a door frame, each attached to the frame at the top and down one side. Allows worker entry into and from an area while minimizing the air movement between rooms.

Cut
(1) Material excavated from a construction site. (2) A term for the area after the excavated material has been removed. (3) The depth of material to be removed, as in a 5' cut. (4) To reduce a cost item.

Cut and fill
An operation commonly used in road building and other rock and earthmoving operations in which the material excavated and removed from one location is used as fill material at another location.

Cut-and-cover
An operation for the laying of pipe or conduit, or for constructing a tunnel, in which a trench is dug, the pipe, conduit, or tunnel liner is placed, and the trench is covered by the excavated material.

Cutaway drawing
A drawing, diagram or illustration of an area showing the internal construction of a part or assembly if a slice could be made into the area or object and the front portion removed.

Cutoff
(1) A wall or barrier placed to minimize underground water percolation or flow. A cutoff is often used at the inlet and outlet of culverts. (2) The design elevation at which the tops of driven piles are cut.

Cutout
(1) A mechanical or electrical device used to stop a machine when its safe limits have been exceeded. (2) An opening in a wall or surface for access or other purposes. (3) A piece stamped out of sheet metal or other sheet material.

Cutting in
A painting technique used to paint around the edges of an object or area, such as trim or a light fixture.

Cycle
The flow of alternating current as it travels in one direction, then reverses itself and travels in the opposite direction. A 60-cycle circuit completes 60 cycles per second.

Cycle time
The time required to complete a repetitive operation such as a batch mix or the refill of a toilet tank after flushing.

Cyclone clip
A clip on a roof tile that holds the tile in place.

Cylinder lock
A lock in which the keyhole and tumbler mechanism are contained in a cylinder or escutcheon separate from the lock case.

Cypress
A wood of average strength and very good decay resistance and durability.
