Displacement pile
A pile that displaces soil as it is driven by either shifting or compacting it.
Dispute procedure
The administrative procedure for processing a contract dispute with the United States government. This procedure is provided for in the Contract Disputes Act.
Disruption
The result of actions or inactions that interfere with performance efficiency, thereby requiring additional effort in performance of the contract work.
Distributed load
A load distributed evenly over the entire length of a structural member or the surface of a floor or roof, expressed in weight per length or weight per area.
Distribution
(1) The movement of heated or conditioned air to desired locations. (2) The delivery of electricity over a system from transmission points. (3) The placement of concrete from where it is discharged to its final location.
Distribution cutout
In a primary electrical circuit, a safety device that disconnects a circuit to prevent overload.
Distribution board

Distribution line
The main electrical feed line to which other circuits are connected.

Distribution transformer
A device that transforms primary voltage into a lower secondary voltage for use within a building.
Ditch
A long, open trench used for drainage, irrigation, or for burying underground utilities.
Ditcher (ditching machine)
A device used for digging temporary ditches or trenches with vertical slopes. The device operates by means of buckets or teeth mounted on a continuously rotating wheel or chain.

Diversion
A pipe, trench, or channel, usually temporary, used to divert the flow of water from its usual course.
Divided light door
A French door with the glass divided into small panes.
Divider strips
The nonferrous metal or plastic strips used as screeds in terrazzo work. Also used to divide the panels.
Dividers
A compass with both legs terminating in points. Used for transferring measurements from a plan or map to a scale, or vice versa.
Division wall (fire wall)
A regulation fire-resistant wall extending from the lowest floor of a building through the roof to prevent the spread of fire.
Dock
A raised platform for the loading and unloading of trucks. Often, the elevation of a portion of the dock is adjustable to accommodate the differing heights of truck beds.
