Double-gable roof
An M-shaped roof with a valley between two gables.
Double-headed nail (duplex-head or form or scaffold nail)
A nail with two heads, one above the other, used for temporary construction such as concrete forms and scaffolds. The nail can secure the work but still be easily extracted.
Double-hung window
A window that has two vertical sliding sashes, one above the other, mounted on separate guides so that either or both can be opened at one time.
Double-pitched
A roof with a second pitch or slope, such as a gambrel roof.
Doublehanded saw
A crosscut saw with a handle on each end, designed to be used by two people.
Douglas fir
Pseudotsuga taxifolia. A coniferous softwood found throughout the western United States and Canada and grown abundantly on the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon. This tree produces a strong, durable timber that is widely used in general construction as well as in finish applications.
Dovetail plane
A wood-finishing tool used for preparing dovetail joints.
Dovetail (dovetail joint)
In finish carpentry, an interlocking joint that is wider at its end than at its base.
Dovetail cutter
A rotary power tool used to shape dovetail joints and mortises.
Dovetail joint
A corner joint of interlacing wedge-shaped fingers of wood. The ends of each finger show through at the edge.
Dovetail saw
A small tenon saw or back saw with a stiffening strip along its back and fine teeth for preparing dovetails.
Dowel
A cylindrical piece of stock inserted into holes in adjacent pieces of material to align and/or attach the two pieces.
Dowel bit (spoon bit)
A carpenter's bit used with a brace for drilling dowel holes. The bit is shaped like a half-cylinder.
Dowel lubricant
A lubricant applied to dowels placed in adjoining concrete slabs to allow longitudinal movement in expansion joints.
Dowel pin
A special nail pointed at both ends and used to fasten mortise and tenon joints.
Dowel plate
A steel plate with holes through which dowels are driven to trim them to size.
Dowel screw
A threaded dowel.
Dowel-bar reinforcement
Short sections of reinforcing steel that extend from one concrete pour into the next. Used to increase strength in the joint.
Downdraft
A downward current of air, such as that which occurs in a chimney flue or a stairwell.
Downlight
A small direct-lighting unit, usually recessed in the ceiling and directing light downward only.
