Drift punch
See driftpin

Driftbolt
A short rod or bar, 300mm to 600mm long, driven into pre-bored holes in timber to secure them to each other. The driftbolt is usually of square stock and slightly larger than the hole.

Driftpin (drift punch)
A tapered pin used in steel erection to align holes for bolting or riveting.

Drill
(1) A hand-held, manually operated or power-driven rotary tool for boring holes in construction materials. (2) A large machine capable of drilling deep holes into the ground. (3) A machine capable of taking core samples in rock or earth.

Drill bit
The part of a drill that does the cutting.

Drill press
A rotary drill, mounted on a permanent stand, that operates along a vertical shaft.

Drip channel
A groove in the underside of a projection, such as a windowsill, that prevents water from running back into the building wall.

Drip edge
(1) The edge of a roof from which rainwater drips into a gutter or away from the structure. (2) The metal or wood strip that stiffens and protects this edge.

Drive band (driving band)
A steel band placed around the top of a timber pile to protect it during driving.

Drive cap
A steel covering placed atop a pile to protect it during driving.

Drive shoe
A cap placed over the bottom of a pile to protect the pile during driving.

Driven pile
A pile that is driven into place by striking it with a

Driven well
A pipe fitted with a well point that has been driven into water-bearing soil.

Drivepoint
See well point.

Drivescrew (screw nail)
A screw that is driven with a hammer and removed with a screwdriver.

Driveway
A private access for vehicular traffic.

Driving band
See drive band.

Driving cap
A steel cap placed over the top of a pile to protect the pile during driving.

Driving resistance
The number of blows required to drive a pile a given distance.

Drop ceiling
See suspended ceiling.
