Building dictionary for the letter D - Page 18

Drop hammer
A pile-driving hammer which gains impact by free-falling after being lifted by a cable in the leads.

Drop-bottom bucket
A concrete bucket whose bottom opens when it touches the surface where the concrete is to be deposited.

Dropped ceiling
See suspended ceiling.

Drum
(1) One of the stone cylinders forming a column. (2) The wall supporting a dome. (3) The rotating cylinder used to wind up cable on a hoist. (4) The cylinder in which transit-mixed concrete is transported, mixed, and agitated.

Drum sander
A power tool with a cylindrical abrasive sleeve used to smooth or contour wood, plastic and soft metals. Usually mounted on a stand.

Dry batch weight
The weight of the materials, excluding water, used to make a batch of concrete.

Dry clamping
The practice of piecing together all parts of an assembly, such as a table, before fastening to confirm that all joints fit.

Dry concrete
Concrete that has a low water content, making it relatively stiff. The effects are a lower water-cement ratio, less pressure on forms, lower heat of hydration, and a consistency that allows for placement on a sloping surface.

Dry construction
Building construction without the use of plaster or mortar. The use of dry materials speeds the construction process and allows earlier occupancy.

Dry glazing
The installation of glass using dry, preformed gaskets in place of glazing compound.

Dry ice
A substance made of solid carbon dioxide that is used in refrigeration applications. Dry ice sublimates, or changes directly from a solid to a gas.

Dry joint
A masonry joint without mortar.

Dry kiln
A chamber in which wood products are seasoned by applying heat and withdrawing moist air.

Dry masonry
Masonry laid without mortar.

Dry mix
A concrete or mortar mixture that contains little water in proportion to its other ingredients.

Dry mortar
Mortar mixed to a very dry consistency, but still wet enough for hydration. This type of mortar is used to prevent compaction in the joints of high, narrow lifts.

Dry rot
A type of decomposition in seasoned wood caused by fungi.

Dry rubble construction
A method of construction using stone rubble but no mortar.

Dry stone wall
A stone wall constructed without mortar.

Drying inhibitor
A substance added to paint to prevent the surface from drying too rapidly, causing wrinkling or cracking.
