Building dictionary for the letter D - Page 19

Drying shrinkage
Contraction caused by the loss of moisture, particularly in concrete, mortar, and plaster.

Dual duct
In electrical wiring, a duct that has two individual raceways.

Dual flush toilet
Any toilet designed to use either 6 or 9 litres of water per flush.

Dual-duct system
An HVAC system using two ducts, one for hot air and one for cold air. The air from these ducts is blended in mixing boxes before distribution to each location.

Dual-head nail
See double-headed nail.

Duct
(1) In electrical systems, an enclosure for wires or cables, often embedded in concrete floors or encased in concrete underground. (2) In HVAC systems, the conduit used to distribute the air. (3) In post tensioning, the hole through which the cable is pulled.

Duct liner
fibreglass sound and thermal insulation material used inside the sheet metal ducts of air conditioning systems.

Duct sheet
The metal used in fabricating HVAC ducts.

Duct silencer
See sound attenuator.

Duct static pressure
(1) The pressure acting on the walls of a duct. (2) The total pressure less the velocity pressure. (3) The pressure existing by virtue of the air density and its degree of compression.

Duct system
The connected elements of an air-distribution system through ductwork

Ductwork
The ducts of an HVAC system.

Due care
A legal term defining the standards of performance that can be expected, either by contract or by implication, in the execution of a particular task.

Dumbwaiter
A small hoisting mechanism or elevator in a building used for hoisting materials only. The dumbwaiter was originally developed by Thomas Jefferson for use in his home at Monticello.

Dumpster
Portable container box normally placed on a construction site for the disposal of job-generated refuse.

Dumpy level
A surveying instrument consisting of a telescope rigidly attached to a vertical spindle. Used to determine relative elevation.

Dunnage
(1) Waste timber. (2) Temporary timber decking. (3) Structural support for a system within a building that is independent of the building's structural frame. An example would be the supports for an air-conditioning cooling tower. (4) Strips of wood used in stowing cargo to provide air space between pieces or packages.

Duplex
A house with two separate dwelling units located one on top of the other.
