Building dictionary for the letter D - Page 4

Dehumidification
The removal of moisture from the ambient air by physical or chemical means.

Dehumidifier
A device for removing water vapor from the air.

Dehydration
The removal of water vapor from the air by means of absorption or adsorption.

Delamination
Separation of plies of materials, usually due to failure of the adhesive. May occur, for example, in veneers, roofing, and laminated wood beams.

Delay
An event or condition that results in work activity starting, or the project being completed, later than originally planned.

Delivery hose
The hose through which concrete, mortar, grout, or shotcrete is pumped.

Deluge sprinkler system
A dry-pipe sprinkler system particularly well- suited for areas that may experience temperatures below freezing. The system is actuated by a heat- or smoke-detection device, which then turns a valve to admit the water.

Demand
The electric load integrated over a specific interval of time, usually expressed in watts or kilowatts.

Demand factor
In an electrical system, the ratio of the maximum demand to the connected load.

Demand load
The actual amount of electrical load on a circuit on any given time.

Demarcation
In masonry, a fixed line for making a boundary limit.

Demolition
The intentional destruction of all or part of a structure.

Demolition ball
The rounded, heavy, metal or concrete demolition device swung on a cable from the boom of a crane to break through concrete or masonry construction.

Demountable partition (relocatable partition)
A non-load-bearing wall made of prefabricated sections that can be readily disassembled and relocated. These partitions may be full height or partial height.

Demurrage
(1) A late charge for detaining a cargo-carrying vehicle beyond the agreed-upon time for its return. (2) A late charge for oxygen and acetylene cylinder rentals and electrical cable reels.

Den
A small room in a home for work or leisure.

Density control
The testing of concrete used in a structure to maintain the specified density.

Deposition
A formal method of obtaining information relevant to a lawsuit by verbally asking an individual questions under oath prior to trial.

Depot
(1) A storehouse, warehouse, or transfer station. (2) A railroad or bus station for ticketing, sheltering, transferring, and shipping passengers and freight.

Depreciation
The allocation of a part of the cost of a property, plant, or equipment item (that has a limited useful life) over its estimated useful life.
