Depreciation factor
The ratio of initial illumination on an area to the present illumination of the same area, used in lighting calculations to account for depreciation of lamp intensity and reflective surfaces.

Depth gauge
An instrument for measuring or testing the depth of dados, grooves, drilled holes, and various other recessed portions of any structural work.

Dermatitis
An inflammation of the skin.

Derrick
A device consisting of a vertical mast and a horizontal or sloping boom operated by cables attached to a separate engine or motor. The device is used for hoisting and moving heavy loads or objects.

Desiccant
An absorbent material that removes water or vapors from another material or from the air. Used in the glazing and refrigeration industries.

Desiccate
To dry thoroughly or to make dry by removing the moisture content, as in the seasoning of timber by exposing it in an oven to a current of hot air.

Desiccator
An apparatus in which a substance is dried.

Design
(1) To create a graphic representation of a structure. (2) The graphic architectural concept of a structure. (3) To make a preliminary sketch, drawing, or outline.

Design specification
A type of specification that prescribes the materials and methods to be used for contract performance.

Design ultimate load (factored load)
The working load multiplied by the load factor.

Design development phase
The second phase of a designer's basic services, which includes developing structural, mechanical, and electrical drawings, specifying materials, and estimating the probable cost of construction.

Design load
(1) In structural analysis, the total load on a structural system under the worst possible loading conditions. (2) In air conditioning, the maximum heat load a system is designed to withstand.

Design pressure
The highest pressure expected during operation of a system, device, or piece of equipment.

Design professional
A term used generally to refer to architects; civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning engineers; interior designers; landscape architects; and others whose services have either traditionally been considered "professional" activities, require licensing or registration by the state, or otherwise require the knowledge and application of design principles appropriate to the problem at hand.

Design strength
(1) The assumed value for the strength of concrete and yield stress of steel, used to develop the ultimate strength of a section. (2) The load-bearing capacity of a structural member, determined by the allowable stresses assumed in the design.

Design/build (design-construct)
A method of construction in which the contractor provides both design and construction services to an owner.

Detached dwelling
A structure intended for habitation that is surrounded by open space.
