Building dictionary for the letter D - Page 6

Detail
A large-scale architectural or engineering drawing indicating specific configurations and dimensions of construction elements. If the large-scale drawing differs from the general drawing, it is the architect's or engineer's intention that the large-scale drawing be used to clarify the general drawing.

Detailer
A draftsman who prepares shop drawings and lists of materials.

Detector

Detention door
A special steel door with fixed lights and steel bars, used to restrict passage in prisons and mental institutions.

Detention window
A narrow, metal awning window manufactured especially for the security of prisons and mental institutions.

Detergent
A chemical compound that cleans surfaces and keeps foreign matter in solution or suspension.

Detonating cord
A flexible cord attached to a highly explosive core, used for setting off the explosive to which it is attached.

Detonator
Any of a number of devices, such as blasting caps, for detonating explosives.

Detritus
Loose material formed from disintegrating rock.

Detritus tank
A settling tank in a sewage-treatment system for collecting sediment without interrupting the flow of sewage.

Detrusion
The shearing of wood fibres along the grain.

Developed area
An area or site upon which improvements have been made.

Development
A tract of land that has been subdivided for housing and/or commercial usage and includes streets and all necessary utilities.

Device
In an electrical system, a component that carries but does not consume electricity, such as a switch or a receptacle.

Dewater
To remove water from a job site by pumps, wellpoints, or drainage systems.

Dewpoint
(1) The temperature at which air of a given moisture content becomes saturated with water vapor. (2) The temperature at which the relative humidity of the air is 100%.

Dextrin (amylin)
A starch compound used for wall sizing and wallpaper adhesive.

Diagonal
A straight structural member forming the hypotenuse of a right triangle, as in the diagonal bracing of a stud wall.

Diagonal brace
A member installed at an angle to make a rectangular frame more rigid.

Diagonal bridging
Crossing pairs of diagonal bracing that extend between the top of one floor joist and the bottom of the adjacent joist. The bracing is used to distribute the load and to decrease deflection.
