Diameter
The line in a circle passing through its centre.
Diamond blade
A high strength circular saw blade used to cut brick, concrete, tile, and other hard surfaces.
Diamond drill
A high-strength rotary rock drill that cuts a core in rock to create blasting holes.
Diaphragm
(1) A stiffening member between two structural steel members, used to increase rigidity. (2) The web across a hollow masonry unit. (3) An instrument to measure the flow of water in pipes.
Diaphragm pump (mud sucker)
A reciprocating water pump with a flexible diaphragm used for continuous dewatering of excavations containing mud and small stones.
Diaphragm valve
A valve that is actuated by fluid pressure on a diaphragm.
Dichroic reflector lamp
An incandescent lamp with a filter for correcting the lamp's light color to make it approximate daylight.
Die
A tool for cutting threads on pipe and bolts.
Die-cast
A method of casting by forcing molten metal into a mold.
Differential leveling
A method for determining the difference in elevation between two points using a level and rod.
Differential settlement
Uneven, downward movement of the foundation of a structure, usually caused by varying soil or loading conditions and resulting in cracks and distortions in the foundation.
Differing site conditions
Unanticipated physical conditions at the site that differ materially from those set forth in the contract or ordinarily encountered in work of the same nature.
Diffused light
Light reflecting from a surface rather than radiating directly from a light source.
Diffuser
(1) Any device or surface that scatters light or sound from a source. (2) A circular, square, or rectangular air distribution outlet, generally located in the ceiling, and comprised of deflecting members to discharge supply air in various directions.
Diffusing glass
A glass with an irregular surface, such as ground glass or sandblasted glass. Irregular surfaces can also be produced by grinding, sandblasting, or by rolling the glass during manufacturing. This type of glass provides a softer light for greater eye comfort.
Diffusing panel
A translucent material, usually plastic, used as a cover over a light source such as a luminaire to distribute the light more evenly.
Diffusing surface
A reflecting surface, usually rough-textured, used to scatter light or sound.
Digital
Refers to communications equipment and procedures in which information is represented in binary form (1 or 0), as opposed to analog form (variable, continuous wave forms).
Dimension
A distance between two points, lines, or planes.
Dimension stone
Stone that has been trimmed or cut to specifications for a particular use, such as for curbs, building stone, paving blocks, and the like.
