Direct selection
A process whereby the owner selects a contractor to construct a project. The selection is made at the owner's discretion based on the contractor's experience, availability, and capability. The terms of the contract for construction are reached by negotiation rather than through the process of competitive bidding.
Direct stress
Tensile or compressive force applied without shear or bending.
Direct system
A heating, air conditioning, or refrigerating system that employs no intermediate heat exchanger to heat or cool a space.
Direct-acting controllers
Increase control pressure as the control variable (temperature or pressure) increases.
Direct-acting thermostat
A device that activates a control circuit within a predetermined temperature range.
Direct-fired air heater
An air heating system in which the heat of combustion is applied directly to the intake air so that no heat exchanger is needed.
Direct-indirect lighting
A lighting system employing light');">diffused light luminaires that emit little or no light horizontal to the lighting unit.
Directional lighting
The lighting of an object or workplace from a desirable source location.
Directional drill rig
A drill rig that can drill holes in directions other than vertical.
Directory board
An informational panel with changeable letters, such as those located in an office building lobby.
Discoloration
Any change in hue, shade, or color from the original or adjacent color.
Discontinuous construction
A method of construction whereby structural members are staggered to reduce sound transmission through a wall or floor.
Discontinuous easement
A right of accommodation (for a specific purpose) requiring action by one of the parties, such as a right-of-way.
Discovery
A pretrial procedure providing for the full disclosure of all facts and documents related to a contract dispute. The methods used include production of documents, depositions, interrogations, and requests for admission.
Disintegration
Deterioration or crumbling caused by oxidation, freezing, or exposure to other elements. The term is often applied to the deleterious effects suffered by exposed concrete.
Disk sander
A hand-held power tool that has a rotating, circular abrasive disk used for smoothing or polishing a surface.
Dispersant
A material capable of holding finely ground particles in suspension. Used as a slurry thinner or grinding compound.
Dispersing agent
An additive that increases the workability or fluidity of a paste, mortar, or concrete.
Dispersion
In painting, small particles of pigment or latex held in suspension in paint or varnish.
Displacement
(1) The volume displaced by a piston or ram moving to the top or bottom of its stroke. (2) In hydraulics, the volume of water displaced by a floating vessel.
