Erosion
The gradual deterioration of metal or other material by the abrasive action of liquids, gases, and/or solids.
Escalation
An increase in the cost of performing construction work, resulting from performing the work in a later period of time and at a cost higher than originally anticipated in the bid.
Escalator
A continuously moving, power-driven, inclined stairway used to transport passengers between different floor levels of a building or into and out of underground stations.
Escape
The curved portion of a column shaft where it springs out from the base.

Escrow
Property (such as money, a deed, stock, or a writing) that is delivered by a person (called a grantor) to a third party to be held until certain conditions are fulfilled. When the conditions are satisfied, the third party releases the property to another person (called a grantee).
Escutcheon
(1) The protective plate, usually metal or plastic, which surrounds a door keyhole or a light switch. (2) A pipe flange covering a floor hole through which the pipe passes. See also faceplate.
Esplanade
A flat, unobstructed stretch of grass or pavement, usually for strolling but sometimes for driving and observing a view.
Estate
A legal right, title, or interest in real property. Estates in real property fall into two broad categories: ownership, and rights to possess and use real property owned by another.
Estimate
The anticipated cost of materials, labor, equipment, or any combination of these for a proposed construction project.
Estimating
The process of determining the anticipated cost of materials, labor, and equipment of a proposed project.
Estimator
One who is capable of predicting the probable cost of a building project.
Etching
The process of using abrasion or corrosion (acid) to wear away the surface of glass or metal, often in a decorative pattern.
Ethylene glycol
(1) Antifreeze. (2) A water-miscible alcohol used to transfer heat in heating and cooling systems and to provide stability in latex- and water-based paints during freezing conditions.
Evaporation
Loss, from a liquid, of moisture in vapor form.
Evaporative cooling
Cooling achieved by the evaporation of water in air, thus increasing humidity and decreasing dry-bulb temperature.
Evaporator
The part of a refrigeration system in which vaporization of the refrigerant occurs, absorbing heat from the surrounding fluid and producing cooling.
Event
In a CPM (Critical Path Method) arrow diagram, the starting point for an activity that cannot occur until all work preceding it has been performed. Indicated on the arrow diagram by a number enclosed in a circle.
Eviction
The lawful or unlawful removal of a tenant from a property.
Excavation
The removal of earth, usually to allow the construction of a foundation or basement. (2) The hole resulting from such removal.
