Building dictionary for the letter E - Page 4

Elbow
A sharply bent or fabricated angle fitting, usually of pipe, conduit, or sheet metal.

Electric appliance
A piece of equipment or a mechanism operated by electricity. Commonly found in a househo ld or office.

Electric arc welding (electric welding)
The joining of metal pieces by fusion, the heat for which is provided by an electric arc or the flow of electric current between the electrode and the base metal. The electrode is either a consumable, melting and bead-depositing, or nonconsumable metal rod. The base is the parent metal.

Electric baseboard heater
A heating system with electric heating elements installed in longitudinal panels, usually along the baseboards of exterior walls.

Electric blasting cap
A blasting cap that is detonated by an electric current.

Electric cable
(1) An electric conductor comprising several smaller-diameter strands that are twisted together. (2) A group of electric conductors that are insulated from one another.

Electric drill
A portable, hand-held, motor-driven tool used for boring holes in a material. Powered either by direct or alternating current.

Electric duct
An enclosed metal runway for electrical conductors or cables.

Electric field
A particular region or space characterized by the existence of a detectable electric intensity at every point within its perimeter.

Electric fixture
An electrical device that is fastened to a ceiling or wall and used to hold lamps.

Electric generator
A mechanism that transforms mechanical power into electrical power.

Electric heat
Heat resulting from the flow of electric current through resistance elements.

Electric heating element
A heat-producing device consisting of a length of resistance material, insulated supports, and terminals that connect to an electrical power source.

Electric lock
A locking mechanism in which the motion of a latch or bolt is controlled by applying voltage to the terminals of the mechanism.

Electric meter
A device that measures the amount of electricity consumed over a certain period of time.

Electric outlet
A point in an electric wiring system at which current is delivered through receptacles equipped with sockets for plugs, making it available to supply lights, appliances, power tools, and other electrically powered devices.

Electric space heater
A portable, self-contained heating device in which electricity supplies the heat energy. The heat is blown into a given space or room by a powerful electric fan also contained within the unit.

Electric strike
An electrical mechanism that allows the release of a door at a remote location.

Electric switch
A device used for opening or closing electric circuits or for changing the connection of a circuit.

Electric welding
See electric arc welding and/or electric resistance welding.
