Fixing
The installation of glass panels in a ceiling, wall, or partition. Fixing is distinct from glazing, which covers most other uses, such as the installation of glass in windows, doors, and showcases.

Fixture
(1) An electrical device, such as a luminaire, attached to a wall or ceiling. (2) An article that becomes part of real property by virtue of being merged or affixed to it, although it was originally a distinct item of personal property.

Fixtures
Tangible goods that are permanently attached to, or embedded in, real property so that they are considered to be part of the real property.

Flagging
(1) A walk or patio paved with flagstones. (2) The process of setting flagstones. See also flagstone.

Flagman
A person who directs vehicular traffic by means of flags or signs.

Flagstone
A flat, irregular-shaped stone, usually 25mm to 100mm thick, used as pedestrian paving or flooring. Flagstones are set in mortar or aggregate outdoors and in mortar indoors.

Flaking

Flame treating
A process by which inert thermoplastic materials and objects are prepared to receive paints, adhesives, lacquers, and inks by immersion in open flame, causing surface oxidation.

Flame arrestor
A mesh or perforated metal safety device used in a flammable storage can for protection from exterior ignition.

Flame cutting
A peeling of paint caused by loss of adhesion and/or cohesion.

Flame-retardant
Treated to resist flame spread and ignition.

Flameproof
Able to resist the spread of flame and not easily ignited, but having less fire resistance than fire-retardant substances.

Flammability
A material's capacity to burn.

Flammable
Capable of being ignited easily, burning intensely, or having a rapid rate of flame spread. See also combustible and inflammable.

Flange
(1) A projecting ring, ridge, or collar placed on a pipe or shaft to strengthen, prevent sliding, or accommodate attachments. (2) The longitudinal part of a beam, or other structural member, that resists tension and compression.

Flange union
A method of connecting threaded pipe using a pair of flanges screwed onto the ends of the pipe and bolted together.

Flap valve
A hinged flap within a plumbing system that restricts water flow to one direction, preventing backflow.

Flapper
The moving part of the flush valve in a toilet that allows water to leave the tank during the flush cycle

Flare fitting
A soft-tube connector made by flaring the end of the tube to provide a mechanical seal. See also flare tool.

Flaring tool
A tool used to flare the end of a pipe for a fitting. See also flare fitting.
