Building dictionary for the letter F - Page 14

Float finish
A rather rough concrete surface texture obtained by finishing with a float.

Float glass
A high quality, flat glass sheet with smooth surfaces, manufactured by floating molten glass on a bed of molten metal at a temperature high enough for the glass to flow smoothly.

Float rod
In a toilet, the threaded rod that links the ballcock and float.

Float valve (float-controlled valve)
A valve controlled by a float in a chamber, such as the float valve in a tank for a water closet.

Floated coat (topping coat)
A layer of plaster applied to a surface with a float, usually the intermediate coat between the scratch coat and the finish coat.

Floating
The operation of finishing a fresh concrete or mortar surface by use of a float, preceding troweling when that is the final finish.

Floating floor
A floor used in sound-insulating construction. The finish floor assembly is isolated from the structural floor by a resilient underlayment or by resilient mounting devices for machinery. The construction isolates machinery from the building frame. See also laminate flooring.

Floating foundation
A reinforced concrete slab designed to move with the surface of the ground without structural damage.

Floating rule
A long straightedge used as a float.

Floating wood floor
A floating floor constructed of wood flooring on a layer of resilient material that isolates it from the building structure.

Flood coat
The top layer of bitumen poured over a built-up roof, which may have gravel or slag added as a protective layer. See flow coat.

Floodlight
(1) A projector type of luminaire designed to light an area or object to a level of illumination higher than the surrounding illumination. (2) A metal housing containing one or more lamps used to illuminate a stage uniformly.

Floor
(1) The surface within a room upon which one walks. (2) The horizontal division between two stories of a building, formed by assembled structural components or a continuous mass, such as a flat concrete slab.

Floor clearance
The distance between the bottom of a door and the finished floor or threshold.

Floor batten
A batten attached to a concrete subfloor, to be used as a nailer for a wood-finish floor.

Floor beam
Any beam that supports the floor of a building or the deck of a bridge.

Floor box
A metal electrical outlet box providing outlets from conduits in or under the floor.

Floor clamp
A clamp used to force floor boards together while nailing them to joists.

Floor drain
A fixture set into a floor, used to drain water into a plumbing drainage system.

Floor framing
Structural supports for floor systems, including joists, bridging, and subflooring.
