Floor guide
A groove in a floor or hardware mounted on a floor, used as a guide for a sliding door.
Floor hanger
See stirrup (2).
Floor hatch
A unit with a hinged panel, providing access through a floor.
Floor joist
Any light beam that supports a floor.
Floor light
A heavy glass pane in a floor that transmits light to the room below.
Floor load
The live load for which a floor has been designed, selected from a building code, or developed from an estimate of expected storage, equipment weights, and/or activity.
Floor opening
A hole or opening in a floor, roof, or platform that measures 300mm or more in its least dimension, wide enough to permit a person to pass through.
Floor panel
A prefabricated section of floor, consisting of finish floor, subfloor, and joists.
Floor pit
Any deep recess in a floor used to provide access to machinery, such as an elevator pit.
Floor plan
A drawing showing the outline of a floor, or part of a floor, interior and exterior walls, doors, windows, and details such as floor openings and curbs. Each floor of a building has its own floor plan.
Floor sealer
A liquid sealer applied with a brush, sprayer, or squeegee to seal floor surfaces, such as concrete or wood.
Floor slab
A structural slab, usually concrete, used as a floor or a subfloor.
Floor span
(1) The distance, in inches, between the centres of floor joists in a floor system. (2) The span covered by floor joists between supports.
Floor tile
(1) Modular units used as finish flooring. Floor tile may be comprised of resilient (asphalt, vinyl, rubber, or cork), ceramic, or masonry materials. (2) Structural units used for floor or roof slab construction.
Floor underlay
Particleboard, plywood, or similar products used on a subfloor to provide a smooth surface on which to lay the finish floor. See also carpet underlay.
Floor varnish
A tough, durable varnish used on floors.
Floor-type heater (floor furnace)
An air-heating unit mounted below a floor grille or grate. Warm air rises from the centre of the grille and cold air returns at the perimeter of the grille.
Floor/area ratio
The ratio of the total floor area of a building to the area of the building lot.
Floorboard
A tongued and grooved piece of timber used in constructing a finished floor. The basic size of floorboards is 100mm x 25mm, although other sizes are used. Floorboards are sold mostly in superior and prime grades.
Flooring
Any finished floor material. See also floorboards.
