Summary: Building dictionary to explain building jargon and terminology from A - Z.
Flooring nail
A steel nail with a deformed shank, often helically threaded, having a countersunk head and a short diamond-shaped point.
Flow
(1) Time-dependent irrecoverable deformation. (2) A measure of the consistency of freshly mixed concrete, mortar, or cement paste in terms of the increase in diameter of a moulded, truncated cone specimen after liming a specified number of times.
Flow coat
A paint coating achieved by immersing an object in streams of paint and draining off the excess.
Flow control valve
A cylindrical pressure-compensating valve that regulates the flow of water. Rated in gpm or gpd.
Flow pressure
The pressure at or near an orifice during full fluid flow.
Flow promoter
A substance added to a surface coating, such as paint, to enhance the brushability, flow, and leveling properties.
Flue
(1) A noncombustible and heat- resistant passage in a chimney used to convey products of combustion from a furnace fireplace or boiler to the atmosphere. (2) The chimney itself, if there is a single passage.
Flue effect
See chimney effect.
Flue lining (chimney lining)
The lining of a chimney flue composed of heat-resistant firebrick or other fireclay materials, which prevents fire, smoke, and gases from escaping the flue to contaminate surroundings.
Flue pipe
A tight duct that conveys products of combustion to a chimney or flue.
Fluorescence
Visible light generated and emitted from a substance such as a phosphor by absorbing radiation of shorter wavelengths.
Fluorescent lamp
A low-pressure mercury electric-discharge lamp in which a phosphor coating on the inside of the tube transforms some of the ultraviolet energy generated by the discharge into visible light.
Fluorescent lighting fixture
A luminaire designed for fluorescent lamps.
Fluorescent reflector lamp
A fluorescent lamp with the coating on only a part of its cross section so that the light produced will be directed.
Fluorescent strip
A luminaire in which fluorescent lamps are mounted on a wiring channel containing the ballast and lamp sockets. Usually reflectors or lenses are not used.
Fluorescent U-lamp
The tubular fluorescent lamp bent at 180 through its centre, forming a U-shape.
Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP)
A soft plastic copolymer with relatively low tensile strength, high chemical resistance, and low coefficient of friction. Applications include coatings and protective linings, chemical and medical equipment, extruded insulation and glazing film for solar panels. A common brand name is Teflon(r).
Fluosilicate
Magnesium or zinc silica-fluoride used to prepare aqueous solutions sometimes applied to concrete as surface-hardening agents.
Flush
(1) Having a surface or face even with the adjacent surface. (2) To send a quantity of water down a pipe to clean, fill, or empty it.
Flush ball
See flapper
