Flying shore
A horizontal member that provides temporary support between two walls.

Foam concrete
See concrete; foamed.

Foam-in-place insulation
A plastic foam employed for thermal insulation, prepared by mixing an insulation substance with a foaming agent just before it is poured or sprayed with a gun into the enclosed receptacle cavities.

Foamed concrete
See concrete; foamed.

Foaming agent
A substance incorporated into plastic mixtures of concrete, rubber, gypsum, or other materials that helps to produce a light foamy consistency by releasing gases into the mixture.

Fog
The visibility and path of the effluent air stream exiting a cooling tower and remaining close to the ground.

Fog curing
(1) The storage of concrete in a moist room in which the desired high humidity is achieved by the atomization of fresh water. See also moist room. (2) The application of atomized fresh water to concrete, stucco, mortar, or plaster.

Foil
(1) In masonry, one of multiple circular or nearly circular holes, set tangent to the inside of a larger arc, that meet each other in pointed cusps around the arc's inner perimeter. (2) A metal formed into thin sheets by rolling.

Foil-backed gypsum board
A gypsum board with aluminum foil on one face. The foil acts as a vapor barrier.

Folding casement
(1) One of two casements with rabbeted masting stiles, installed in a single frame with a mullion. (2) One of several casements hinged together in a way that permits them to open and fold in a limited space.

Folding door
An assembly of two or more vertical panels hinged together so they can open or close in a confined space. A floor- or ceiling-mounted track is usually provided as a guide.

Folding partition
(1) Large panels hung from a ceiling track, sometimes supported also by a floor track, which form a solid partition when closed, but stack together when the partition is maneuvered into an open position. (2) A partition, faced with fabric and hung from a ceiling track, that folds up flexibly when opened like the pleated balloons of an accordion.

Folding rule
A rule made of lengths that are joined by pivots so it can be folded when not in use.

Folding stair

Foot
(1) The bottom or base of an object. (2) A unit of measurement of length in the imperial system. (3) A projection on a cylindrical roller used to compact a layer of earth fill.

Foot bolt
A spring-operated bolt fastened to the lower part of a door and controlled with pressure of the foot.

Footing
That portion of the foundation of a structure that spreads and transmits the load directly to the soil.

Footing beam
(1) A reinforced concrete beam connecting pile caps or spread footings to distribute horizontal loads caused by eccentric loading. (2) The tie beam in a roof system.

Footing step
A change in elevation of a strip footing.

Footpiece
An item of ductwork in a heating, air-conditioning, or ventilating system that serves to change the direction of the airflow.
