Footprint
The area that falls directly beneath and shares the same perimeter as a structure.
Force; compression
A force acting on a body, tending to compress the body. (Pushing action).
Force; shear
A force acting on a body which tends to slide one portion of the body against the other side of the body. (Sliding action).
Force; tension
A force acting on a body tending to elongate the body (Pulling action).
Force; torsion
A force acting on a body which tends to twist the body. (Twisting action).
Forced circulation
The circulation of a fluid by mechanical means, as by a pump or fan.
Forced convection
Heat transfer produced by the forced circulation of air, water, etc.
Foreclosure
The legal transfer of a property deed or title to a bank or other creditor because of the owner's failure to pay the mortgage, whereupon the owner loses the right to the property.
Foreclosure sale
The optional right of the mortgagee or lending institution to sell mortgaged property if the mortgagor fails to make payment, applying proceeds from the sale toward the outstanding debt.
Forging
A piece of metal worked into a desired shape by one or more processes, including pressing, rolling, hammering, and upsetting.
Forked tenon
A joint formed by a tenon cut into a long rail and inserted into an open mortise.
Forklift truck
A self-powered vehicle equipped with strong prongs, or forks, that can be raised or lowered. A forklift truck is used to move objects, especially material on pallets, from one location and/or level to another.
Form
A temporary structure or mould for the support of concrete while it is setting and gaining sufficient strength to be self-supporting. See also formwork.
Form pressure
Lateral pressure acting on vertical or inclined formed surfaces, resulting from the fluid-like behavior of the unhardened concrete.
Form anchor
A device used to secure formwork to previously placed concrete of adequate strength. The device is normally embedded in the concrete during placement.
Form board
A board or sheet of wood used in formwork.
Form coating
A liquid applied to interior formwork surfaces for a specific purpose, usually to promote easy release from the concrete, to preserve the form material, or to retard the set of the near-surface matrix for preparation of exposed- aggregate finishes.
Form hanger
A device used to support formwork from a structural framework. The dead load of forms, weight of concrete, and construction and impact must be supported.
Form lining
Selected materials used to line the face of formwork in order to impart a smooth or patterned finish to the concrete surface, to absorb moisture from the concrete, or to apply a set-retarding chemical to the formed surface.
