Grout
(1) A hydrous mortar whose consistency allows it to be placed or pumped into small joints or cavities, as between pieces of ceramic clay, slate, and floor tile. (2) Various mortar mixes used in foundation work to fill voids in soils, usually through successive injections through drilled holes.
Grouted masonry
(1) Hollow masonry units with some or all of the cells filled with grout. (2) Masonry comprising two or more wythes, the spaces between which are filled solidly with grout.
Grouting
(1) The placing of grout so as to fill voids, as between tiles and under structural columns and machine bases. (2) The injection of grout to stabilize dams or mass fills, or to reinforce and strengthen decaying walls and foundations. (3) The injection of grout to fill faults and crevices in rock formations.
Growth rate
A measurement of wood growth taken from the number of growth rings and used to rate strength.
Growth ring
A ring that designates the amount of a tree's growth in a single year.
Grub
In site work, the clearing of stumps, roots, trees, bushes, and undergrowth.
Grub screw
(1) An often headless screw used to secure two separate parts in a position relative to each other, preventing the independent motion of either part. (2) A screw used to adjust the tension of a spring.
Guarantee (warranty)
A legally enforceable assurance of quality or performance of a product or work, or of the duration of satisfactory performance.
Guard
(1) Any bars, railing, fence, or enclosure that serves as protection around moving parts of machinery or around an excavation, equipment, or materials. (2) A security guard hired to maintain safety and security at a construction site.
Guard rail
(1) A horizontal rail of metal, wood, or cable fastened to intermittent uprights of metal, wood, or concrete around the edges of platforms or along the lane of a highway. (2) The rail that separates traffic entering or exiting through side-by-side automatic doors.
Guesstimate
An approximation of the cost of a project made by the cost estimator, without having performed a detailed quantity takeoff. See also educated guess.
Guide wire
(1) A steel wire or cable used to guide the vertical movement of a stage curtain in a theater. (2) A line or wire that guides the movement of a counterweight arbor. (3) A wire placed along the edge of a roadway to be paved. A sensor on the pavement spreader adjusts the elevation of the pavement from the wire.
Guillotine
In woodworking or cabinetry, a trimming machine that can cut the two matching ends of a joint to any given angle.
Gullet
(1) The concave gap between the teeth of a file or saw. (2) The height of a saw tooth as measured from the base to the point. (3) The space between tabs on a standard asphalt strip shingle.
Gumwood
Timber from a gum tree, especially eucalyptus.
Gun
(1) Equipment designed to deliver shotcrete. (2) A pressure cylinder for pneumatic delivery of freshly mixed concrete. (3) A spray gun. (4) A slang expression for a transit, as it is used to shoot grades.
Gun finish
The finish on a layer of shotcrete left undisturbed after application.
Gun grade
See gun consistency.
Gusset
A metal or wood brace attached to structural members at their joints to add strength and stability.
Gusset plate
A plate fastened across a joint, as in wood or steel framework members.
