Granolithic finish
A concrete wearing surface, placed over a concrete slab, containing aggregate chips to improve its longevity.

Grantee
(1) The party to whom a deed or similar document transfers property or property rights. (2) The buyer.

Grantor
(1) The party from whom a deed or similar document transfers property or property rights. (2) The seller.

Granular
(1) A technical term relating to the uniform size of grains or crystals in rock. (2) Composed of grains.

Granular material
A sandy type of soil whose particles are coarser than cohesive material and do not stick together.

Graphics
Engineering or architectural drawings created with attention to mathematical rules, such as perspective or projection.

Graphite paint
A type of paint made from boiled linseed oil, powdered graphite, and a drier. Graphite paint is used to inhibit corrosion on metal surfaces.

Grate
(1) A type of screen made from sets of parallel bars placed across each other at right angles in approximately the same plane. A grate allows water to flow to drainage, while covering the area for pedestrian or vehicular traffic. (2) A surface with openings to allow air to flow through while supporting a fuel bed, as in a coal furnace.

Gravel
Coarse particles of rock that result from naturally occurring disintegration or that are produced by crushing weakly bound conglomerate. Gravel is retained on a No. 4 sieve.

Gravel board
An easily replaceable board that is secured horizontally near the bottom edge of a timber fence so as to prevent contact between the ground and the vertical boards, thus preventing rotting.

Gravel roofing
Roofing composed of several (built-up) layers of saturated or coated roofing felt, sealed and bonded with asphalt or coal-tar pitch which, for solar protection and insulation purposes, is then covered with a layer of gravel or slag. Usually used on flat or nearly flat roofs.

Gravity wall
A massive concrete retaining wall whose own weight prevents it from overturning.

Gravity water supply
A water distribution system in which the supply source is located at an elevation higher than the use.

Gray scale
A series of achromatic samples that vary discretely from white to black.

Grazing iron
(1) In plumbing, a tool for finishing soldered joints. (2) A glass-cutting device.

Grease extractor
A device installed in conjunction with a cooking exhaust system and employing grease-collecting baffles positioned so as to create a path of sharp turns through which the cooking exhaust is passed at high velocity. The grease, which is particulate and heavier than air, is collected on the baffles by centrifugal force, while the carrying air continues around the sharp turns on its way to being exhausted, thus becoming cleaner at each baffle.

Grease trap
A device installed between the kitchen drain and the building sewer to trap and retain fats and grease from kitchen waste lines.

Green
A term referring to unseasoned timber or to fresh, unhardened concrete, plaster, or paint.

Green concrete
Concrete that has set but not hardened.

Green timber
Undried, unseasoned timber.
