Rigid frame
A structural framing system in which all columns and beams are rigidly connected; there are no hinged joints.
Rim latch
A surface-mounted latch.
Rim lock
A face-mounted door lock.
Ring-shank nail
A nail with ring-like grooves around the shank to improve its grip.
Rip
To saw timber parallel to the grain.
Ripper
A device with protruding claws that is pulled by a tractor. Used to penetrate and disrupt the earths surface up to 900mm in depth.

Ripsaw
A coarse-toothed saw used for cutting wood in the direction of the grain.
Ripsawing (ripping)
Sawing timber parallel to the grain.
Rise
(1) The vertical distance from the top of a tread to the top of the next higher tread. (2) The height of an arch from springing to the crown. (3) The vertical height from the supports to the ridge of a roof. (4) Height difference between the crown of a road and its lowest point. (5) See travel, rise.
Riser
(1) A vertical member between two stair treads. (2) A vertical pipe extending one or more floors.
Riser board
The member forming the vertical face of a step.
Riser height
The vertical distance between the tops of two successive treads.
Riser pipe
A pipe that extends vertically from one floor level to the next for the purpose of conducting water, steam, or gas.
Risk management
An approach to management and procedure designed to prevent occurrence of culpability, potential liability, contravention of law, or other potential risk that could bring about loss in the process of building construction.
Rivet
A metal cylinder or rod with a head at one end which is inserted through holes in the materials to be fastened. The protruding end is flattened to tie the two pieces together.
Riveting
The act of fastening or securing two or more parts with rivets.
Roadway
The area of a highway including the surface over which vehicles travel as well as the land along the edges, such as slopes, ditches, channels, or other gradations necessary to ensure proper drainage and safe use.
Rock
Generally a hard mineral matter of different compositions appearing in either a loose or consolidated form; 3 main forms include, igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.
Rock anchor
Steel rod anchored in rock by grouting used to hold temporary shoring or retaining walls around an excavation.
