Building dictionary for the letter R - Page 13

Rock drill
A high-powered pneumatic or electrically-driven device for boring holes into rock.

Rock saw
A saw');">circular saw that removes a wide kerf on the upper surface of a log. A rock saw is used to remove stones or debris before a log enters the head rig.

Rock wool
A type of mineral wool made by forming fibres from molten rock and slag. Used as insulation in walls and ceilings.

Rockwell hardness
A measure of the resistance of a material to indentation, expressed as an index number obtained by pressing a standard steel ball or diamond into the material under controlled conditions. A high index number indicates a hard material.

Rod
See bar.

Rod bender
A power-assisted device with adjustable rollers and supports that is used for bending steel reinforcing rods into usable shapes.

Rod cutter
Trench-type, hydraulically operated, wedge-like shear, used to cut steel reinforcing rods.

Rod dowel
See dowel

Rod; tamping
See tamping rod.

Rodding
Compaction of concrete or the like by means of a tamping rod. See also tamping.

Roll
(1) A quantity of sheet material wound in cylindrical form. (2) A rounded strip of roofing fastened to and running along the ridge of a roof. (3) Any type of rounded moulding. (4) Any heavy, metal cylinder used to flatten, smooth, or form material.

Roll insulation
See insulation blanket.

Roll-up door (rolling shutters)
A device consisting of horizontal interlocking metal slats that ride along wall guides. When the door is opened the slats coil around a barrel assembly located above the door.

Rolled beam (rolled steel beam)
A beam that is fabricated of steel and passed through a hot-rolling mill.

Rolled glass
Glass that is manufactured with a patterned surface that partially obscures vision and light.

Roller
(1) A heavy, self-propelled or towed device used to compact granular fill. (2) A small hand tool used to smooth wall covering and flooring. (3) See paint roller.

Rolling doors
See roll-up door

Rolling grille door
A device similar to a roll-up door, but with an open grille rather than slats; used as security protection.

Roof
The outer cover and its supporting structures on the top of a building.

Roof covering
The covering material installed in a building over the roof deck. The type of covering used depends on the roofing system specified to weatherproof the structure properly.
