Roofing square
(1) A steel square used by carpenters. (2) A measure of roofing material. (3) See square.
Roofing tile
A preformed slab of baked clay, concrete, cement, or plastic laid in rows as a roofing cover. Tiles have a variety of patterns, but fall into two classifications: roll and flat.
Room finish schedule
Information provided on design drawings specifying types of finishes to be applied to floors, walls, and ceilings for each location.
Rope
(1) Twisted strands of fibre made into strong, flexible cord. (2) Strands of wire braided or twisted together that are used for heavy hoisting or hauling.
Rope diameter
The largest diameter of the cross section of a wire rope. fibre ropes are usually measured by circumference (3.14 x diameter).
Roped hydraulic elevator
A car connected by cables to an operating ram. A motor-driven positive displacement pump discharges oil into the pressure cylinder which extends the ram. The ram is retracted by bleeding oil off the pressure cylinder and into a storage tank.
ROPS
roll-over protection system
Rose
(1) The metal plate or escutcheon between a doorknob and the door. (2) See rosette.

Decay in wood caused by fungi and other microorganisms. Rot reduces the strength, hardness, and density of the wood.
Rotary cutting
A method of obtaining wood veneers by rotating logs against a flat knife and peeling the veneer off in a long continuous sheet. Peeling provides a greater volume and a more rapid production then does sawing or slicing.
Rotary drill
A machine for making holes in rock or earth by a cutting bit at the end of a metal rod, usually turned by a hydraulically- or pneumatically-driven motor.
Rotary compressor
An air compressor using a rotary impeller driving air through a curved chamber to compress the air.
Rotary float (power float)
Motor-driven revolving blades that smooth, flatten, and compact the surface of concrete slabs or floor toppings.
Rotary hammer
Electric boring tool that rotates with percussive action and cuts very hard materials.
Rotary pump
Any pump using gears, vaned-wheels, or a screw mechanism to displace liquid, usually delivering large volumes at low pressure.
Rotary trowel
See rotary float
Rotating laser
A leveling and surveying instrument with a revolving head that emits a laser beam horizontally. A sensor then picks up the beam to determine an elevation.
