Rotunda
A circular building or hall that is round inside and out and usually domed.
Rough estimate
An estimate made without detailed investigation.
Rough timber
Wood that has been sawn at the mill, but not trimmed. See dressed.
Rough floor
A base or subfloor, consisting of a layer of boards or plywood nailed to the floor joists.
Rough flooring
Any materials used to construct an unfinished floor.
Rough grading
Cutting and filling the earth for preparation of finish grading.
Rough opening
An opening in a wall or framework into which a door frame, window frame, subframe, or rough buck is fitted.
Rough-in dimensions
In plumbing installations, the distance from the centre of a water supply, waste opening or mounting holes to the finished wall or floor.
Roughing-in
(1) The base coat in three-coat plasterwork. (2) Any unfinished work in a construction job. (3) Installing the concealed portion of electrical or plumbing systems to the point of connection for electrical outlets or appliances, or plumbing fixtures.
Roughing-out
A preliminary shaping operation in carpentry.
Round
(1) A moulding that may be semicircular to full round, as in a closet rod. (2) A turn of wire rope around a drum.
Round moulding (round)
A fairly large moulding with a circular or nearly circular cross section.
Rout
(1) To deepen and widen a crack, preparing it for patching or sealing. (2) To cut out by gouging.
Router
An electrically driven device with various bits for cutting grooves or channels in wood.
Router gauge
A carpenter's tool consisting of a guide, a bar with a scale, and a narrow chisel as a cutter; used in inlaid work to cut out narrow channels in which colored strips are laid.
Row house
A house in a row of houses separated by party walls and covered by a continuous roof.

Rubbed finish
(1) On woodwork, a dull finish obtained from hand rubbing with a rag or pad saturated with water or oil and pumice. (2) A finish obtained by using an abrasive, often a carborundum stone, to remove surface irregularities from concrete.
Rubber
(1) A highly resilient natural material manufactured from the juice of rubber trees and other plants. (2) Any of various synthetically manufactured materials with properties similar to natural rubber. (3) A cushioned backing for a carpet.
