Rubber tile
A soft and yielding floor covering that reduces the transmission of impact noises produced by walking or from other causes.

Rubber-emulsion paint
See latex paint.

Rubber-tired roller
A machine for compacting and kneading soil using pneumatic-tired rollers.

Rubbish chute
(1) A smooth, open shaft in a multistory building, used to convey trash from upper floors to a collection room. (2) A temporary chute used for trash removal during the construction of a multistory building.

Rubble
Rough stones of irregular shape and size, broken from larger masses by geological processes or by quarrying.

Ruff sawn
A designation for plywood paneling or siding that has been saw-textured to provide a decorative, rough-sawn appearance.

Rule
(1) A straightedge with graduations used for measuring, laying out lengths, or drawing straight lines. (2) A straightedge for working plaster to a plane surface.

Rule of thumb
A statement or formula that is not exact but is close enough for practical work.

Rumpus room
Is a casual room or area used for relaxation and recreation purposes, usually containing audio visual and computer equipment and furniture.

Run
(1) In plumbing, a pipe or fitting that continues in the same straight line as the direction of flow. (2) In roofing, the horizontal distance between the outer face of the wall and the roof ridge. (3)In stairs, the horizontal distance from the face of the first riser to the face of the last riser. (4) Series of surveyed elevation changes in one direction. (5) To sieve plaster or putty. (6) Window sash.

Rung
A bar, usually of circular cross section, used as a step in a ladder.

Runner
(1) The lengthwise horizontal bracing or bearing members. (2) A cold-rolled channel used to support steel studs in a partition or ceiling tile.

Running
(1) Descriptive of a repeating design in a band having a smooth progression. (2) Forming a cornice of plaster or similar material in place with a running mold. (3) Operating a powered hand tool, particularly a drill.

Running bond
See stretcher bond.

Runoff
Water that is carried away from, rather than absorbed by, the area on which it falls.

Runway
Decking over an area of concrete placement, usually of movable panels and supports, on which buggies of concrete travel to points of placement.

Rust
Any of various powdery or scaly reddish-brown or reddish-yellow, hydrated, ferric oxides formed on the surface of iron or steel that is exposed to moisture and air. Rust eventually will weaken or destroy the material if allowed to progress.

Rust-inhibiting paint
See anticorrosive paint

Rustic brick
A brick that has a rough-textured finish produced by covering it with sand, wire brushing, or impressing it with a pattern. These bricks are often in a variety of colors.

Rustic finish
A type of terrazzo topping in which the matrix is recessed by washing prior to setting so as to expose the chips without destroying the bond between chip and matrix. A retarder is sometimes applied to the surface to facilitate this operation. See also aggregate+finish">exposed aggregate finish.
