Random ashlar
Constitutes ashlar masonry in which stones are set without continuous joints, and appear to follow a random pattern, although a large pattern may be repeated. See also ashlar.
Random course
An ashlar or squared stonemasonry course of irregular height.
Random lengths (RL)
timber of various lengths. A random length loading is presumed to contain a fair representation of the lengths being produced by a specific manufacturer.
Random widths
Boards, timber, and shingles of varying widths.
Range
(1) A row or course of masonry. (2) A straight line of objects such as columns. (3) The difference between prices, costs, estimates, and bids. (4) The difference between the hot water temperature entering a cooling tower and the cold water leaving a cooling tower.
Rapid-hardening cement
A high-early-strength cement.
Rasp
A file with projecting teeth for rough work.
Ratchet
A mechanism with a hinged catch, or pawl, that slides over and locks behind sloped teeth on a gear or rod, allowing motion in one direction only.
Rated lamp life
The average life of a particular lamp fixture.
Rated load
The overall weight that a piece of machinery is designed to carry.
Rated speed
The speed at which a piece of machinery is designed to operate with an appropriate load.
Ratio
The relative size of two quantities expressed as one divided by the other.
Raw linseed oil
Linseed oil that has been refined, but has not received further processing such as boiling, blowing, or bodying.
Raw material
A material used for the construction or manufacture of goods or products.
Rawl plug
A short fibre cylinder with a lead lining, driven into a hole in wood, masonry, glass, plaster, tile, concrete, or other materials to receive and hold a screw.
Reactance
Opposition to alternating current (AC) by capacitance or inductance or both. It is expressed in ohms, and symbolized by X.
Reaction
Resistive forces acting on a structural member that serve to hold it stable.
Reactivity
The propensity of one substance to chemically react with another.
Ready-mixed concrete
See concrete; ready-mixed.
Reagent
A substance used in analysis and synthesis of chemical reactions.
