Reducer
(1) A solvent used in paints to reduce the viscosity of the paint. (2) A pipe fitting, larger at one end than at the other. A reducing coupling. (3) A substance that chemically reacts with another by removing an oxygen atom from the chemical structure of the second substance. (4) A pipe coupling with a larger size at one end than the other. The larger size is designated first. Reducers are threaded, flanged, welded, etc. Reducing couplings are available in either eccentric or concentric configurations.

Reducing joint
The connecting joint of unequally sized electrical conductors.

Reducing pipe fitting
Fitting that is constructed to facilitate the joining of unequally sized pipes.

Reed switch
Two or more highly conductive reeds inside a glass container. The reeds open or close together in response to a magnetic field.

Reentrant angle
An internal angle of usually less than 90 degrees.

Reference standards
Professionally prepared generic specifications and technical data compiled and published by competent organizations generally recognized and accepted by the construction industry. These standards are sometimes used as criteria by which the acceptability and/or performance of a product, material, assembly, or piece of equipment can be judged.

Referendum
A special election subdivision of municipal law that establishes public approval (e.g., for elected officials to sell general obligation bonds as a means of financing a public project).

Reflected glass
Glass with a special metallic coating used to repel light and radiant heat.

Reflected plan
A plan of an upper surface, such as a ceiling projected downward.

Reflection
The return from a material's surfaces of light or sound waves.

Reflective tube skylight
See skylight; reflective tube.

Reflector
A device used to redirect light or sound energy by the process of reflection.

Reflector lamp
An incandescent lamp in which a part of the bulb acts as a reflector.

Reflux valve
See check valve

Refraction
The change in path of a light ray or energy wave as it passes obliquely from one medium to another.

Refractories
Materials, usually nonmetallic, used to withstand high temperatures.

Refractory
Resistant to high temperatures.

Refractory brick
A brick manufactured for high temperature use.

Refrigerant
The medium used to absorb heat in a cooling cycle.

Refrigerant compressor unit
A unit consisting of a pump with various controls for regulating refrigerant flow.
