Building dictionary for the letter R - Page 6

Refrigeration system
A system in which a refrigerant is compressed, condensed, and expanded as a means of removing heat from a cold reservoir. The heat is rejected elsewhere at a higher temperature.

Refrigerator
A container or space and the machinery for cooling it.

Refusal
The depth at which a pile cannot be driven any deeper.

Register
An opening to a room or space for the passage of conditioned air. The register has a grill and a damper for flow regulation.

Registered architect
See architect

Regulatory
Related to provisions specified in a regulation implementing a law.

Rehabilitation (rehab)
The process of making possible a compatible use for a property through repair, alternations and additions, while preserving those portions or features which convey what have been determined to be important cultural or architectural values.

Reinforced brickwork
Masonry brickwork in which steel reinforcement is placed.

Reinforced blockwork
Masonry blockwork with reinforcing steel and grout placed in the voids to resist tensile, compressive, or shear stresses.

Reinforced concrete
Concrete containing adequate reinforcement, prestressed or not prestressed, and designed on the assumption that the two materials (steel and concrete) act together in resisting forces. See also plain concrete.

Reinforced concrete masonry
Concrete masonry construction in which steel reinforcement is so embedded that the materials act together in resisting tensile, compressive, and/or shear stresses.

Reinforced masonry
Unit masonry construction in which steel reinforcement is so embedded that the materials act together in resisting tensile, compressive, and/or shear stresses. See also masonry+unit">masonry unit.

Reinforced T-beam
A concrete T-beam strengthened internally with steel rods to resist tensile and/or shear stresses.

Reinforcement
Bars, wires, strands, and other slender members embedded in concrete in such a manner that the reinforcement and the concrete act together in resisting forces.

Reinforcement; cold-drawn wire
Steel wire made from rods that have been hot-rolled from billets and cold-drawn through a die used for concrete reinforcement of small diameter such as in gauges not less than 2 mm nor greater than 16 mm.

Reinforcement; cold-worked steel
Steel bars or wires which have been rolled, twisted, or drawn at normal ambient temperatures.

Reinforcement; distribution bar
Small-diameter bars, usually at right angles to the main reinforcement, intended to spread a concentrated load on a slab and to prevent cracking.

Reinforcement; dowel bar
See dowel.

Reinforcement; expanded metal fabric
See expanded metal.

Reinforcement; helical
Steel reinforcement of hot-rolled bar or cold-drawn wire fabricated into a helix, more commonly known as spiral reinforcement. Used in round columns.
