Summary: Building dictionary to explain building jargon and terminology from A - Z.
Reinforcement; high-strength
Concrete reinforcing bars having a minimum yield of 414 MPa.
Reinforcement; mesh
See welded-wire fabric and welded-wire fabric reinforcement.
Reinforcement; principal
Elements or configurations of reinforcement that provide the main resistance of reinforced concrete to tensile loads borne by structural components. See also reinforcement; secondary.
Reinforcement; secondary
Reinforcement other than main reinforcement.
Reinforcement; spiral
See spiral reinforcement.
Reinforcement; transverse
Reinforcement at right angles to the longitudinal reinforcement. Transverse may be main or secondary reinforcement.
Reinforcement; welded
Reinforcement joined together by welding.
Reinforcing bar
A steel bar, usually with manufactured deformations, used in concrete and masonry construction to provide additional strength.
Reinforcing plate
An added plate used to strengthen a member or part of a member.
Reinforcing rod
See reinforcing bar
Reinforcing steel
See reinforcing bar
Rejection of work
The act of rejecting work that is defective, or that which does not conform to contractually agreed upon requirements.
Related trades
The different building trades required to complete a project.
Relative compaction
The dry density of soil expressed as a percentage of the density of the soil after a standard compaction test.
Relative humidity
The ratio of the quantity of water vapor actually present to the amount present in a saturated atmosphere at a given temperature, expressed as a percentage.
Relay
An electromagnetic or electromechanical device using small currents and voltages to activate switches or other secondary devices.
Release agent
Material used to prevent bonding of concrete to a surface, such as to forms. See also bond breaker.
Relief
(1) Carved or embossed decoration raised above a background plane. (2) The representation of elevations of the earth's surface, usually referenced to a mean-sea-level datum plane, by means of contour lines.
Relief map
A map showing relief by means of contour lines, shading, tinting, or relief models.
Relief valve
A pressure-activated valve held closed by string tension and designed to automatically relieve pressure in excess of its setting.
