Relief vent
An auxiliary vent that is supplementary to regular vent pipes. The primary purpose is to provide supplementary circulation of air between drainage and vent pipes.

Remedial action
A permanent remedy taken instead of, or in addition to, a removal action that is in response to a release or threatened release of hazardous substances.

Remedial design
The phase of the site remediation process in which remedial technologies and processes are designed prior to installation.

Remedies
The manner in which a breach of contract is settled by a court or arbitrators.

Remodelling
Making alterations to an existing structure such that it will be better suited to current needs. This type of work may involve changing the use of interior space by repositioning walls, replacing bathroom or kitchen fixtures, or other such modifications. Remodeling projects generally incorporate new replacement materials, and are not concerned with maintaining historic authenticity.

Remote-control circuit
An electrical circuit that controls another circuit by means of a relay device.

Removable mullion
A door mullion that can be removed from a door frame to allow passage of oversized objects.

Removable stop
A removable moulding or trim used to stop motion and permit the installation of windowpanes or doors.

Removal action
A short-term action in response to a release of hazardous substances that might present an imminent and substantial danger to human health or to the environment.

Render
(1) To shade an architectural or machine drawing to give it a more real-life appearance. (2) To apply cement mortar, directly to brickwork or other masonry.

Rendered brickwork
Brickwork that has a cement mortar applied to the face.

Rendering
(1) The application, by means of a trowel or float, of a coat of mortar. (2) A drawing of a project or a portion of a project that delineates materials, shades, and shadows.

Renovation
Modernizing the elements within a structure to meet current functional and aesthetic requirements. Renovation work may also be considered remodeling or adaptive reuse.

Replacement value
The estimated cost to replace an existing building based on current construction costs.

Resaw
(1) To saw a piece of timber along its horizontal axis. (2) A saw');">band saw that performs such an operation.

Resealing trap
A trap connected to a plumbing fixture drainpipe so constructed as to allow the rate of flow to seal the trap without causing self-siphonage.

Reservoir
A tank or receptacle used for the accumulation and retention of a fluid.

Reshoring
The construction operation whereby the original shoring or posting is removed and replaced in such a manner as to avoid deflection of the shored element or damage to partially cured concrete.
