Summary: Building dictionary to explain building jargon and terminology from A - Z.
Residual deflection
The amount of deviation that remains after an applied load has been removed.
Residual stress
The stress remaining in a member after an applied force has been removed.
Resilience
The work done per unit volume of a material in producing strain.
Resilient flooring
A manufactured interior floor covering material, in either sheet or tile form, that is resilient.
Resin
(1) A natural or synthetic solid, or semisolid organic material of indefinite and often high molecular weight having a tendency to flow under stress. It usually has a softening or melting range and fractures conchoidally. (2) A natural vegetable substance occurring in various plants and trees, especially the coniferous species, used in varnishes, inks, medicines, plastic products, and adhesives.
Resistance
See electrical resistance
Resistor
A device included in an electric circuit to introduce a desired resistance.
Resonance
A condition reached in an electrical or mechanical system when the applied load frequency coincides and is equal to the natural undamped frequency of the system.
Resonator
(1) A device that intensifies vibration and volume, usually of sound waves. (2) A hollow metal container that is utilized to create microwaves.
Respirator
A device used to facilitate breathing in a hazardous atmosphere.
Restitution
A court-ordered money award that is intended to restore the parties to their financial position as it existed before the contract was formed.
Restoration
Returning an existing property to a condition that depicts its form, features and character as they appeared at a particular period of time. Restoration may involve removal of features from other periods in the property's history and reconstruction of missing features from the targeted period. (Where a building has been changed over time or additional structural elements added, the period chosen for the restoration is usually the one that reflects the highest level of aesthetics or historical significance.) Wherever possible, the materials and methods used to perform the restoration should match those originally used to build the structure. Limited and sensitive upgrading of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems (and other code-required work) is appropriate within a restoration project.
Restrictive covenant
An agreement between individuals, incorporated within a deed, which stipulates how land can be used. The constraints may include: the specific use to which property may be put, setback of buildings, size of yards, locations and dimensions of fences, and type of architecture. Racial and religious restrictions on inhabitants are not legally enforceable.
Resurfacing
The placing of a new surface on an existing pavement to improve its conformation or increase its strength.
Retaining wall
(1) A structure used to sustain the pressure of the earth behind it. (2) Any wall subjected to lateral pressure other than wind pressure.
Retardation
Reduction in the rate of hardening or setting, i.e., an increase in the time required to reach initial and final set or to develop early strength of fresh concrete, mortar, or grout. See also retarder.
Retarder
An admixture which delays the setting of cement paste, and hence of mixtures such as mortar- or concrete-containing cement.
Retempering
Addition of water and remixing of concrete or mortar that has lost its workability and become too stiff. This is not usually recommended, as some of the strength is lost. See also tempering.
Retention
(1) A percentage, usually 10%, withheld from a periodic payment to a contractor, in accordance with the owner- contractor agreement, for work completed. The retention is held until all terms of the contract have been fulfilled. (2) The amount of preservative, fire-retardant treatment, or resin retained by treated or impregnated wood.
Reticulated
Covered with crossing lines, netted.
