Self-closing fire door
A fire door equipped with a closing device.

Self-drilling screw
A fastener that does not require a pre-drilled hole.
Self-furring
Metal lath or welded-wire fabric formed in the manufacturing process to include means by which the material is held away from the supporting surface, thus creating a space for keying of the insulating concrete, plaster, or stucco.
Self-furring nail
A nail with a flat head and a washer or spacer in the shank, used for fastening reinforcing wire mesh and spacing it from the nailing member.
Self-supporting wall
A non-load- bearing wall.
Self-tapping screw
A screw designed to cut its own threads in a predrilled hole.
Semi-detached dwelling
One of a pair of dwellings with a party wall between them.
Semi-detached house
One of a pair of houses with a party wall between them.
Semi-gloss
(1) The degree of surface reflectance midway between glass and eggshell. (2) Paints and coatings displaying these properties.
Semi-rigid frame
A type of structural framework construction in which some flexibility is allowed at the joints of columns and beams.
Semi-trailer
A trailer that has a set or sets of wheels at the rear only. The front part is supported on a towing vehicle.
Semicircular dome
A dome constructed in the shape of a half-sphere.
Semicircular arch
A round arch whose intrados is a complete semicircle.
Semiconductor
(1) An electric conducting material, with resistivity in the range between metals and insulators, such as germanium or silicon. (2) Miniature electric devices manufactured from semiconductor materials.
Sensor
A device designed to detect an abnormal ambient condition, such as smoke or high temperature, and to sound an alarm or operate a device.
Separate contract
A prime contract which is one of several on a project. Distinguished from a subcontract.
Separate contractor
A contractor who has a direct contract with the owner. See also separate contract.
Separation
(1) The tendency of coarse aggregate to separate from the concrete and accumulate at one side as concrete passes from the unconfined ends of chutes, conveyor belts, or similar arrangements. (2) The tendency of the larger aggregate to separate from the mass and accumulate at one side as processed aggregate leaves the ends of conveyor belts, chutes, or similar devices with confining sides. (3) The tendency of the solids to separate from the water by gravitational settlement. See also bleeding and segregation.
Septic tank
A watertight receptacle that receives the discharge from a sewage system, or part thereof. They are constructed to separate solids from the liquid, digesting organic matter during a period of detention, and discharging the clarified liquids.
