Side mounting

Side outlet
A tee fitting with an outlet at right angles to the line of run.
Side-cutting pliers
General purpose pliers to snip light gauge wire. Its jaws have both a gripping and a cutting section.
Siding (weatherboarding)
timber or panel products intended for use as the exterior wall covering on a house or other building.
Sieve
A metallic plate or sheet, a woven wire cloth, or other similar device, with regularly spaced apertures of uniform size, mounted in a suitable frame or holder, for use in separating material according to size. In mechanical analysis, an apparatus with square openings is a sieve; one with circular apertures is a screen.
Sieve size
The nominal size of openings, usually between cross wires of a testing sieve.
Sign (signboard)
(1) A board or surface displaying directions, instructions, identification, or advertising. (2) A warning of hazard, temporarily or permanently affixed, or placed at a location where a hazard exists.
Signal
Aggregate waves that are transmitted or received.
Silica
Silicon dioxide (SiO2).
Silicone
A resin, characterized by water-repellent properties, in which the main polymer chain consists of alternating silicon and oxygen atoms, with carbon-containing side groups (free radicals). Silicones may be used in caulking or coating compounds or admixtures for concrete.
Sill
(1) The horizontal member of the bottom of a window or exterior door frame. (2) As applied to general construction, the lowest member of the frame of the structure, resting on the foundation and supporting the frame.
Silo
(1) A tower-like structure, usually cylindrical, used to store items such as grain, coal, or minerals. (2) A structure built in the ground to house a military missile.
Silt
Waterborne soil.
Silt trap
A trap that catches waterborne soil before it can enter a drainage system and obstruct flow.
Silver solder
A solder containing silver and having a high melting point, used for high-strength solder joints.
Simple beam
A beam without restraint or continuity at its supports.
Simple span
The support-to-support distance of a simple beam.
Single span
Any structure without intermediate support.
Single-cut file
A file having serrations cut in one direction only.
Single-duct system
An air-conditioning system using one duct to serve a number of different areas.
