Skylight; reflective tube
An acrylic domed opening in a roof that admits light via a reflective tube; usually 300mm in diameter.
Slab
(1) A flat, horizontal (or nearly horizontal) moulded layer of plain or reinforced concrete, usually of uniform but sometimes of variable thickness, positioned either on the ground or supported by beams, columns, walls, or other framework. (2) The outside, lengthwise cut on a log. See also flat slab and flat plate.
Slab floor
A floor of reinforced concrete.
Slab form
The formwork used in placing a concrete slab.
Slab on grade
A concrete slab placed on grade, sometimes having insulation board or an impervious membrane beneath it.
Slab-on-grade construction
A type of construction in which the floor is a concrete slab poured after plumbing and other equipment is installed.
Slag
See blast-furnace slag
Slash pine
Pinus elliottii. One of several pine species that is fast-growing and matures early.
Slat
A thin, narrow strip of wood, metal, or plastic.
Slate
A fine-grained metamorphic rock possessing a well-developed fissility (slaty cleavage) usually not parallel to the bedding planes of the rock.
Slating
(1) The installation of slates on a roof or wall. (2) The slate shingles on a roof or wall, taken collectively.
Sledge
See sledgehammer.
Sledgehammer (sledge)
A heavy hammer of up to 45kg, having two striking faces, and swung with both hands.
Sleeper
(1) One of many strips of timber fastened to the top of a concrete slab to support a wood floor. (2) Any horizontal timber laid on the ground to distribute load from a post.
Sleeve
See pipe sleeve.
Slenderness ratio
The ratio of effective length or height of a wall, column, or pier to the radius of gyration. The ratio is used as a means of assessing the stability of the element.
Slewing
Rotating the jib of a crane so the load moves through a horizontal arc.
Sliced veneer
Veneer sliced from a face of a squared-off log.
Slide rule
A device used to make certain calculations rapidly, consisting of a base of wood, metal, plastic, or cardboard with various scales and a scaled sliding insert. The calculations are made by offsetting appropriate scales.
Sliding fire door
A fire door hung from an overhead track. The track may be sloped for direct gravity operation or horizontal with operation by weights, cables and pulleys.
