See sliding sash
Slip joint
(1) A vertical joint between an old and a new brick wall, made by cutting a slot in the old wall and filling it with brick projecting from the new wall. (2) A joint in plumbing in which one pipe slips within another and the seal is made by a pressure device fitting over the joint, often threaded to the larger pipe.
Slip-resistant tile
Ceramic tiles with abrasive particles or grooves in the surface.
Slipform
A formwork system that can be used repetitively and moved in large sections not requiring disassembly. The form is generally pulled or raised as concrete is placed. The form may move in a generally horizontal direction to lay concrete evenly for highway paving or on slopes and inverts of canals, tunnels and siphons; or vertically to form walls, bins or silos.
Slop sink
A deep sink set low on a wall, used to clean mops and to empty and clean pails.
Slope
(1) The angle of repose at which a soil material will stand without moving. (2) The slope of a roof expressed as one unit of rise to one unit of run. See also pitched roof, incline, and grain slope.
Sloughing
Subsidence of shotcrete, due generally to excessive water in mixture. See also sagging.
Sludge
(1) The semi-liquid, settled solids from treated sewage. (2) Waste material composed of wet fines produced from grinding a terrazzo floor. (3) Accumulated solids in the wash water reservoir of paint spray booths.

Slump
A measure of consistency of freshly mixed concrete, mortar, or stucco equal to the subsidence measured to the nearest 6 mm of the moulded specimen immediately after removal of the slump cone.
Slump cone
A mould in the form of the lateral surface of the frustum of a cone with a base diameter of 200mm, top diameter 100mm, and height 300mm, used to fabricate a specimen of freshly mixed concrete for the slump test. A cone 150mm high is used for tests of freshly mixed mortar and stucco.
Slump test
The procedure for measuring slump. See also concrete slump test.
Slurry
A mixture of water and any finely divided insoluble material, such as Portland cement, slag, or clay in suspension.
