Soffit
The underside of a part or member of a structure, such as a beam, stairway, or arch.

Soft light
Dispersed light producing soft shadows.

Soft solder
A solder used to join metals in welding and brazing applications. It is typically a mixture of tin and lead, although solder');">soft solder of pure lead is used in some industries to join copper.

Softwood
(1) A general term referring to any of a variety of trees having narrow, needle-like or scale-like leaves, usually coniferous. (2) The wood from such trees. The term has nothing to do with the actual softness of the wood; some softwoods are harder than certain of the hardwood species.

Soil
A generic term for unconsolidated natural surface material above bedrock.

Soil profile
A vertical section through a site showing the nature and sequence of layers of soil.

Soil branch
A branch line of a soil pipe.

Soil class
A classification of soil, Class A = most sand and rock, Class S = most silt and some clay, Class M = moderately reactive clay, Class H = highly reactive clay, Class E = extremely reactive clay, Class P = soft soils.

Soil classification test
A series of tests combined with sensory observations used to classify a soil. The tests may include such aspects as grain size, distribution, plasticity index, liquid limit, and density.

Soil cover
See ground cover.

Soil drain
A horizontal soil pipe.

Soil mechanics
The application of the laws and principles of mechanics and hydraulics to engineering problems dealing with soil as a building material.

Soil pipe
A pipe that conveys the discharge from water closets or similar fixtures to the sanitary sewer system.

Soil pressure
See contact pressure

Soil sample
A representative sample of soil from a specific location or elevation of a construction site, usually extracted to determine bearing capacity.

Soil stabilizer
(1) A machine that mixes in-place soil and an added stabilizer, such as cement or lime, in order to stiffen the soil. (2) A chemical added to soil to stiffen it and increase the stability of a soil mass.

Soil stack
A vertical soil pipe that carries the discharge from water closet fixtures.

Soil structure
The pattern in which the soil particles are arranged in the aggregate.

Soil survey
See subsurface investigation

Soil test
See soil classification test.
